When I was in higher as a freshman, this textbook was assigned for a survey course. Information technology was the first textbook I've always decided to proceed and since then, I have read it nearly entirely. I don't have an AH degree or annihilation similar that, but as a enthusiast I wuld recommend it for anyone who aspires to augment their agreement of the history of art. It's piece of cake to read, the annotations are terrific and I but actually enjoy it.

It's like shooting fish in a barrel to read, the annotations are terrific and I merely really relish it.

I had to read the entire book in a school year for my art history class, and although there was a lot to become through, it is a quality textbook. Interesting to read with a good format and a big amount of information. I would recommend it to anyone into fine art history with a demand for a compendium of all art from prehistoric to 20th century.

Art history is a bailiwick in crunch.

Art history is a subject in crisis.

This text book shows all the seams.

It calls itself "art through the ages." It makes a pretense of being global. What it actually deals with is wealthy-white-male European art upward until about 1900. Inside of that narrow lens, information technology tin uphold the pretense of a narrative arc. Movements and developments that build upon each other to create ane structure, one tradition. The story is in line with a 'Bully Man' view of history that unspools with a certain succession of empires and kings and no need to call back well-nigh the plebes. Just memorize the dates and yous're washed.

But everything outside of that one narrative arc haunts the discipline. Frightened, the editors make nods here and there to art happening in other places. They apace clear their throats and become us back to Europe. But Europe itself is unspooling. When modern fine art hits, they lose the thread entirely. They become desperate. In the end, they tin simply huff and puff virtually the absurdities of "multiculturalism."

Inside this story of art'southward history, fine art is rooted in conquering. Killing animals and humans. Building empire. Celebrating empire.

Sometimes something tumbles out from the gaps, even here. Small art, old faces, feathers and fur. Usually they phone call it "the grotesque."

Then much ameliorate than the modernistic version I used. And so much improve than the modern version I used. This one covers all of art history (prehistory, through what was so recent in the 1960s/70s) and provides So MUCH More than actual historical background on both the history itself, too as the artists, in addition to the artworks themselves. The pictures are mostly black and white (with color plates), but if you lot Google the artwork being discussed, you'll do good even more than from the history contained within.

Information technology notwithstanding is awkwardly worded and all the same doesn't say much, only it certainly says more than the 14th Edition I'm currently using for the second half (Renaissance to 1900) of art history.

*edit on May 8* I've now used this book for multiple other classes, aside from fine art history, namely for mythology and archæology. Quite indispensable for liberal students... practically all subjects can be tied to fine art history in some way or another.

This volume does non comprehend "world artistic tradition" as claimed in the preface. This is the 9th edition, hardcover. Comprehensive in terms of western art, with a adept representation of non-European influences, information technology is understandably considered a standard text of fine art history education.

OK, so I read this for schoolhouse, which tempers it a bit, but overall I establish it a articulate, easy-to-read history of fine art, good for getting an overview of a variety of periods, styles, and artists.

5/5: A great summary of art and history through the standard chronology and placement beginning with the centre e, traversing through to europe, america, and including some african and asian fine art. This was the textbook for my intro art history class in college. Not as gorgeous to expect at or also written equally Gombrich or Janson, just more comprehensive. The timelines in each chapter were helpful context. Nigh of the fine art and compages had pocket-sized black & white images, with color reproductions off in their own collation.

I was taking Western Civ at the aforementioned time, and the ii course reinforced one another. Art Through the Ages was an essential book to me.

This volume brings dorsum and then many memories. This is i of the few books aside from my theatre anthologies that I kept from my college classes. This book along with the grade gave me a modest understanding of art and architecture through the beginnings of culture. However it gave me a much deeper appreciation and love of fine art and architecture that has remained with me.
